Quotable “QUOTES”

In Uncategorized on 24/02/2011 at 5:28 am

Many of you know of my love for “quotes” so I thought now might be a good time to share a few of my favourites – and hopefully get a couple of YOU to do the same!

Firstly, the quote I really HATE is:

  • Becerebilen, yapar. Beceremeyen öğretir.[George Bernard Shaw]

But, I love the “come back”:

  • Becerebilenler, yaparlar. Anlayanlar, öğretir.[Lee S. Shulman]

Come on! Even if you do not speak Turkish, you have to be able to work those out!

A couple of my long-standing favourites are:

  • “I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” [Albert Einstein]
  • “We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.” [Lloyd Alexander]
  • “Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can – there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did.” [Sarah Caldwell]

And something my favourite “boss” taught me:

  • “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” [Theodore Roosevelt]

My love of movies sometimes gets the better of me:

  • Morpheus: I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one who must walk through it [The Matrix]
  • Obi-wan: Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our point of view. [Star Wars]
  • Yoda: Try not. Do or do not, there is no try [Star Wars]

And words from Master Yoda, encourage me to call on more of our “big guns”:

  • “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” [John Dewey]
  • “All education springs from some image of the future. If the image of the future held by a society is grossly inaccurate, its education system will betray its youth.” [Alvin Toffler]
  • Learning from programmed information always hides reality behind a screen.” [Ivan Illich]
  • “Learning is not so much an additive process, with new learning simply piling up on top of existing knowledge, as it is an active, dynamic process in which the connections are constantly changing and the structure reformatted.” [K. Patricia Cross]
  • “The secret of education is respecting the pupil.” [Ralph Waldo Emerson]
  • “The illiterate of the future are not those that cannot read or write. They are those that can not learn, unlearn, re-learn.” [Alvin Toffler]
  • “You learn at your best when you have something you care about and can get pleasure in being engaged in.” [Howard Gardner]
  • “Underneath the visible problems with reading and writing lies the deeper problem of ‘illearnacy’: an acquired disabling of learning courage and learning initiative.” [Guy Claxton]

Going back to the second quote above:

  • “Teaching is the highest form of understanding.” [Aristotle]

I’ll finish with another Turkish one and offer a “prize” for the best translation of it (I have never been able to manage this one):

  • “Türkiye’de yükseköğretim 28 yıldır YÖK sistemi tarafından şekillendirilmektedir. Ancak YÖK elbisesi artık dar gelmektedir.” [Ergüder, et al.]

YOU must have a favourite quote of your own! Let us all know…

  1. The modern mind has lost all capacity to wonder. It has lost all capacity to look into the mysterious, into the miraculous – because of knowledge, because it thinks it knows. Osho
